Burning Man 2009 – Aug 31-Sept 7

Burning Man 2009 festival between Aug. 31-Sept. 7 at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.

The festival of lights is here yet again; and if you have not still booked your tickets for Burning Man 2009, then do not waste anytime and do it right now. Last year the event attracted more than forty nine thousand visitors, and this year, it is well set to cross the fifty thousand mark. So, do make sure that you are not left behind.

For those, who are not aware of the event, this piece of writing can prove to be a good source of information. So, putting your queries at rest let me tell you, as to what the event is all about. The event involves the burning of a huge wooden effigy in the shape of a human, and is organized by the Black Rock City, LLC.

The event is organized in the magnificent Black Rock Desert, of Northern Nevada region; and is one of the major tourist attractions of this region, attracting thousands of tourists, many of whom especially come to this place, to attend the event. The act of burning an effigy may be an experiment in community for some people, while for some it could be a sweeping mode of self-expression; and some may simply find it an annual festivity. Notions may differ, but the event in itself is absolutely magnificent.

Although, the event would complete twenty three years of its existence, it seems just yesterday, that a bunch of enthusiasts set fire to an eight feet human effigy along with a wooden dog on the Baker beach. The year was 1986 and Larry Harvey and Jerry James, who were the people behind the whole business, restarted a prior event of similar nature, which was organized by Sculptor Mary Grauberger, who was a friend of Larry’s girlfriend. It said that an impulsive urge for self expression drew these people, who along with a few friends started this event. With the passage of time, the number of visitors swelled up, and so was the case with size of the effigy; and today, what started off as an eight feet effigy, grew up to a height of eighty four feet last year.

While many people credit the 1973 classic “Wicker Man”, to be the original inspiration behind the entire event, Larry and James state that it was much later that they watched the movie. Irrespective of the controversy regarding source of inspiration, no body can take away the credit, which is due to these people, for starting a festival, which has today turned into a major gathering of people.

In any case, do make it a point, that you do not miss out on the event.
